Family favorite meals : Comfort Food Edition

Food is such a big part of our family life. It’s not just about eating; it’s about the memories we make at the dining table at home, even sometimes we also love to eat outside. Anyways.. Today, I want to share the top 3 meals that my family absolutely loves. These dishes are simple, delicious, and full of love.

Here are our favorites!

1. Stir-Fried Split Gill Mushroom with Anchovies (Kodop & Ikan Bilis Goreng)

I know its weird, but.. this is a unique dish that is very special to us. In Sabah, we call this mushroom “Kodop.” I don’t have picture of this special meal. Check out this video of how to cook this recipe -> Masakan Tradisi Sabah!

In English, it is known as the Split Gill Mushroom. It usually grows on dead wood, like rubber trees. It has a small, chewy texture that tastes amazing when cooked right. Yes, it is a fungi family but it edible.

My family loves it when it is stir-fried with crispy anchovies (ikan bilis) and a bit of lada putih it a chili but white. The salty crunch of the anchovies mixes perfectly with the soft, chewy mushrooms. It is a simple “kampung” style dish, but it tastes expensive to us!

2. Fried Noodles with Chicken (Mee Goreng Ayam)

Who doesn’t love fried noodles? This is our go-to meal when we want something quick but filling.

Mee Goreng Ayam translates to Fried Noodles with Chicken. It is yellow noodles stir-fried with soy sauce, veggies, and tender pieces of chicken. It has that perfect balance of sweet, salty, and a little bit spicy.

Whether it’s for breakfast or a late-night supper, this plate always makes everyone smile. It reminds me of the good food from street stalls, but homemade is always healthier…. and i know some restaurants in my hometown who cook it very deliciously.

3. Mee/mihun Chicken Soup (mee/mihun Sup Ayam Kampung)

Finally, the ultimate comfort food.

We prefer using “Ayam Kampung” (free-range chicken) because the meat is leaner and has a sweeter, more natural flavor compared to regular farm chickens.

We cook it slowly with spices like ginger, garlic, and the “sup bunjut” (soup spice bag). The soup is clear but very flavorful. It is perfect for rainy days or when someone in the family is feeling a bit under the weather. It really warms the heart.
